日语学院本科教育始于1973年，硕士研究生教育始于1979年，现有日语语言、日本文学、日语教育、日本文化、日本经济5个方向；博士研究生教育始于2013年，重点培养“党和国家重要文献对外翻译研究”人才。目前，在校本科生和研究生人数总计1100余人。在国内各类日语专业综合排名中，我校日语专业近年来一直名列前茅。

厦门大学海外教育学院海外教育学院是厦门大学专门从事对外办学的高等教育机构，也是中国最早开展对外教育的机构之一。学院创建于1956年，曾使用华侨函授部、海外函授部、海外函授学院等名称，1991年经教育部批准定名为海外教育学院。学院现设有华文系、海外学生部、远程教育部、海外汉语言文化教育研究所、日本研究所等机构，是国家汉办支持周边国家汉语教学重点院校之一，也是国务院侨办华文教育基地之一。

日语教育研究生院于2001年4月成立。它是全日本第一个将日语作为第二外语教育为基础的、导入系统教师培训体系进行教学的独立的研究生院。日语教育研究生院的主要特色是不但重视日语教员必须具备的教育理论,而且重视实践性的学习,实施各种日语教育课程的管理方法、制作教材以及关于教育方法论的讲座。此教育体系是根据学生的能力和课程等级、与实行综合日语教育课程的日语中心合作,致力于培育面対留学生的教师培训。
