科技日报2007年2月9日报道 “列入国家‘863高科技计划项目’，并搭载中国实验八号卫星进行航天基因诱导育种的‘绿醇源’甜高粱优良品种已经研制成功。这种甜高粱适宜生长在贫瘠、盐碱土地，其秸秆含有高于甘蔗2.3%的糖量。秸秆中的糖分和籽粒中的淀粉极易转化为乙醇，成为汽油替代品；生产乙醇的废渣可直接生产高档纸，造纸废物中还可提炼木质固沙剂，用于沙漠化治理。”

泰国是世界上著名的大米生产国和出口国，泰国香米更是有着很高的知名度。2007年2月6日有科学家表示，泰国一共有好几万种水稻，其中的许多种类都已经濒临绝种，而且这些大米有可能具有潜在的医学或者农业用途。为此，泰国建立了“大米基因银行”，保存着2.4万种水稻种子，希望日后能通过先进技术让这些濒临绝种的水稻“重出江湖”。
