在当代中国艺术界，有两个引起广泛争论的对立说法，与本文将要讨论的视觉图像与书写语言之间的权力关系有关：一是吴冠中说一百个齐白石也抵不上一个鲁迅；二是北大教授张颐武说章子怡比一万本孔子都有效果。不过，笔者只是把他们的看法视为一个由来已久的古老争论在今天的回音，从学术上研究这个回音的来龙去脉才是本文的目的。
