世界古代中世纪史研究室成立于1978年，世界古代中世纪史现为中国社会科学院登峰计划资助的重点学科。世界古代中世纪史研究室人员在国别、地区史的不同领域开展深入的学术研究，积极参与整体世界史的探索。研究室现有科研人员9人，其中研究员1名、副研究员3名、助理研究员4名，在站博士后1名；具有博士学位者7人，具有硕士学位者1人。

中国世界古代中世纪史研究会(民政部登记证号：0440社团代码：50000361—1)成立于1991年8月1日，由中国世界古代史研究会（成立于1979年）和中国世界中世纪史研究会（成立于1979年）合并组成，戚国淦教授（首都师范大学历史系）、王敦书教授（南开大学历史系）和侯建新教授（天津师范大学历史文化学院）先后担任本会会长，本届理事会成立于2012年。
