四川大学华西法医学专业最早设置在1953年，自1953年至1958年，法医学教师除担任成都市公安局的法医学检案以外，即为医学系的学生开设了54学时法医学课。十一届三中全会以后，四川医学院又开始设立法医学教学小组，教授法医学课，并为医学专业的79、80级两个班学习法医学专业的学生开设专业课。
