德国马普学会的语言学家综合数千个有关人类语言的专项研究成果，新绘制出了由142张彩图组成的“世界语言结构图集”。马普学会2005年8月1日发表新闻公报说，在马普学会进化人类学研究所专家领导下，一个由50名研究人员组成的小组利用约6800个资料来源，绘制出了这本“世界语言结构图集”。

公元1887年，波兰医生柴门霍夫发表了他创制的人造国际辅助语方案Esperanto，在我国，这门人造语言被通译为“世界语”。世界语是在吸收了印欧语系众多语言的共同性的合理因素上创造出来的，因此更加简化和规范化，具有声音优美、科学性强、富于表现力的特点。一百多年来，世界语以它独特的魅力成为迄今为止数百种国际辅助语方案中的佼佼者，是最成功的人造国际辅助语。
