新华社2006年7月23日报道，意大利国家核物理研究所与比利时离子束应用公司最近达成正式协议，在生物医学领域销售它们共同研发的专为肿瘤强子疗法设计的新型回旋加速器。强子疗法在肿瘤放射治疗技术中是最准确的一种。强子疗法使用强子（由夸克构成的带电粒子）充当质子和离子。这些粒子与其他放射疗法所产生的粒子不同，它们可以精确地对准肿瘤组织，从而使放射对重要器官和肿瘤周围健康组织造成的损害降到最低程度。
